Our Route
Currently, our plan is to head from the US base, Patriot Hills and man haul to the South Pole. Then we'll kite ski back to Patriot - all unsupported and with no resupply.
Note: this is regarded as a supported expedition because we are using kites on the return journey.
We are also having a little think about starting and finishing from Hercules Inlet (79°58'27.69"S, 80° 4'40.30"W). Patriot Hills is about 50km inland from the actual coast of Antarctica (where the sea ice meets the land) so Hercules Inlet is considered the 'real' starting point.
It is quite a hard 50km as it is actually an extra 200km because we fly into Patriot so we'd have to kite ski to Hercules Inlet, then man haul back and the same again when we finished. Plus it is reasonably steep and at the start, with a full 150kg sled weight, it will be quite tough.
So we'll see. It will depend on flights, sled weight and how we are feeling so it is a decision to be left until late.
Patriot Hills ( 80°18'19.61"S, 81°20'40.16"W) is 1056km (656 miles) from the south pole, so at a minimum, we'll be travelling 2112km (1312 miles) and at a maximum, 2260km (1404 miles).
